Let’s Pray: Finding Joy When Zeal Wears Me Out

Last night, we read Psalm 119:139-140 together as a family.

“My zeal wears me out, for my enemies ignore your words.  Your promises have been thoroughly tested and your servant loves them.”

I quite literally laughed out loud at how this verse hit me and what I thought the Lord was trying to reveal to me.

“My zeal wears me out…”

Zeal is defined as an eagerness or an ardent interest in pursuing something.  Fervor or passion.  The Psalmist described his love and eagerness to follow God’s laws as zeal.  Have you ever been so excited and enthusiastic to carry out a God-given mission?  Jessica, Abby, and I definitely meet this definition when it comes to establishing a homeschool resource center to support Middle Tennessee families.  We communicate daily, often several times a day.  Meet multiple times a week. We post, we plan, we blog, we network, we fundraise. We work every day to advance the mission given by the Lord.  And sometimes all this zeal wears me out.

“…for my enemies ignore your words.”

Have you ever just stopped right in your tracks and thought… sometimes the enemy is me?

It’s easy when we have energy and enthusiasm for a project to proceed in our own strength. We can often ignore what we know His word tells us.  This is why it’s so important to be in the Word every day, We need to be constantly reminded of His truth and not ignore what He tells us.

“Your promises have been thoroughly tested and your servant loves them.”

It was no mistake this week’s sermon at church was a deep dive into the first chapter of James, and after several months of planning, meeting, preparing, creating, and brainstorming, I just find myself…tired.  Thoughts of just giving up and going home creep in and make themselves cozy in my mind.  But just like He always does, God came right on time with this promise:

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” James 1:2-3

Let’s Pray

So, dear friends who are following the journey of Legacy Homeschool Resource Center, would you join us and pray?

  • We want to use the energy and passion God has given us to walk in step with Him, not in front of or behind Him.
  • We want to stay grounded in His word, remembering His truths and how fully He can be trusted to finish the work He has started.
  • We want to run this race well and not fall short, developing greater perseverance and stronger faith.

Let’s pray that Legacy Homeschool Resource Center is everything He would have it be.
