Photo of Astronomy and the Bible
Astronomy and the Bible

A good reference book for families, Astronomy and the Bible gives simple, sensible answers to basic astronomy questions from the viewpoint of a literal Bible interpretation. Many times definite answers cannot be given, so various proposed theories are presented. There are about 170 pages, packed full with information, plus a glossary and a list of other suggested resources for further study. It is divided into six main sections: the earth and moon, the solar system, the stars, galaxies and the universe, general science, and technical terms and ideas. I appreciate the fact DeYoung has included an index so that we can quickly locate specific topics. This is quite a thought provoking book, appropriate for ages ten and up, but especially good for high school level.

Beautiful Feet Books began in 1984 as the solution to a homeschool mom’s real problem of wanting to teach her children history without using a dry and lifeless textbook. Beautiful Feet Books publishes and provides teachers guides, curriculum packs, individual books, and other products to homeschool educators worldwide seeking to create an environment where learning is loved. Based on the Charlotte Mason philosophy, this literature-rich approach introduces curriculum to students in a way that is fascinating, relatable, and fun.

Educationally, they seem to have balanced their curriculum with teaching methods that suit most learning styles, although much of the necessary information to properly teach to all the learning styles is contained in the teacher’s editions rather than in student books.

Classical Historian publishes their own teacher guides and student workbooks for history courses that are used with textbooks from other publishers as well as one they publish themselves. The Classical Historian courses teach students how to read with discernment, how to gather information, how to think about and analyze information, and how to discuss and write about what they have studied. They do so within the context of history courses covering different eras. These courses implement classical education strategies such as Socratic discussions and analytical writing. Classical educators will note that the methods used are appropriate for both the dialectic and rhetoric stages. Each course should take a year to complete.

This is not a typical natural history museum! Earth Experience offers an interactive, dynamic experience for visitors — you’ll see ongoing research and activities, and you’ll view relics and exhibits that reflect the ground you walk on and the environment where you live.  When you leave, you’ll have a greater understanding and appreciation of the natural history of Tennessee, parts of the United States and the greater world, from the beginning of time through today.

》You’ll see a working paleontology laboratory where real dinosaur bones are cleaned and repaired.

》You’ll see a molding and casting operation creating dinosaur displays and souvenirs for sale in the gift shop.

》You’ll touch dinosaur bones, petrified wood, rocks and minerals.

》You’ll see the dinosaur finds we uncover every summer through our active dig program in Montana.

》You’ll meet Frank, our 38-foot-long T. Rex skeleton!

Photo of The Tuttle Twins
The Tuttle Twins

How do you describe economics to a 7-year-old? Should your preteen care about the government? Are your kids learning about the free market in class?

For too long, parents have been at the mercy of professional curriculum developers to instruct their children. History is watered down, key principles omitted altogether, and time and attention given to things of lesser importance. Freedom-loving parents have long been left alone to shoulder the burden of educating their children and passing down a love of liberty.

While there are many books to teach these ideas to adults, there has been a profound void in the children’s literature market. The Tuttle Twins series closes the gap, helping parents convey the principles of freedom to their kids in a fun way.

Each book in this series focuses on a different aspect of the principles of a free society: free markets, competition, individual rights, the non-aggression principle, personal responsibility, protectionism, and a variety of other issues—all boiled down to core concepts that children of different ages can easily grasp.

Buy your own copy today for the children in your life. Understanding the idea of freedom is a gift that shouldn’t be reserved just for adults!

Photo of Vocabulary from Classical Roots
Vocabulary from Classical Roots

General vocabulary study makes sense for the younger grades, but the type of more specialized study with Greek and Latin roots we find in the Vocabulary from Classical Roots series becomes more useful for older children since they should have already built up a foundational vocabulary and can start to make connections with prefixes, suffixes, and roots.
