Jessica Morgan – Why We Choose to Homeschool

Legacy Homeschool Resource Center Founder

Nine years ago, I was “that mom.”  You know that mom, the one that says things like, “Good for you for homeschooling, but it’s just not for me.  I don’t have the patience, and my kids would never listen to me.”   I was her.

Maybe you are “that mom,” too, and if you are, it is alright. You are why I am sharing our story.

As I watched my sister-in-law homeschool her kids from start to finish – I felt a bit envious of her patience. However, I had allowed the world to tell me I wasn’t good enough to do it. I thought, “What on earth will I do with my kids when they are with me 24/7?”  If I am being honest, I may have laughed out loud when God first planted the idea in my heart.

On a random day, about ten years ago, God woke me up and told me this was it.  It was time for me to stop being scared. It was time for me to step up, stop making excuses, and trust Him.   God literally took my heart and flipped it around. He allowed me to see that I was enough when I would allow Him to work through me.    My conversations with God over those next few months were brutally humbling. They were eye-opening, and although hard to hear, have made me a better parent, and wife for my family.

Flexibility and Blessings of Homeschooling

Homeschool has allowed so much flexibility for our family.  It has allowed us to shepherd the kids’ hearts and build their character and love for God. Our kids have been able to focus on the gifts God placed in them. We can travel when we want to. I have been able to teach to each of my kids’ individual learning styles. And the best part is we have shared so many memories and conversations that may have been missed if they were at school 8 hours a day.

It hasn’t always been easy. It hasn’t been pretty, but it is our perfectly imperfect homeschooling story.

My prayer for the Legacy Homeschool Resource Center is that it becomes a safe place for all homeschool families in Middle TN.  A place where those thinking about making the change to home education can come to ask questions, get support, and find a community.  A place where homeschool families already a few years into their journey can find additional resources to help make their homeschool experience even better, easier and expand on the extracurricular activities available to their kids.  And finally, a place for us veteran homeschool moms to come and find a purpose in a new season of life that is so different than all the rest.

What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:9
