What Is The Difference Between a Homeschool Co-Op and a Tutorial?

hands on learning classrooms

What is a Homeschool Co-Op?

In the Murfreesboro homeschool community, a homeschool co-op is generally understood to be a parent-led organization where a group of parents agree to share the teaching and supervisory responsibilities on a group learning day. Many of these Murfreesboro homeschool co-ops meet in local churches and community centers. Classes are taught by parents, and all parents are typically expected to stay at the location to help in some capacity. Co-ops are generally very affordable since there are no paid employees or teachers, just volunteer parents. Reasonable fees may still be charged to cover expenses such as facility rental fees, class supplies, and insurance.

What is a Homeschool Tutorial?

A tutorial is a student “drop-off” option for learning where students are taught by hired tutors, often credentialed teachers or other experts on a subject.  Tutorials meet anywhere from 1-4 days a week for group learning opportunities.  Parents are not typically required to stay except for volunteer/helper days. Fees tend to be significantly higher because they include all the fees required for a co-op, as well as compensation for tutors.
