Jessica Beshearse – Why We Choose to Homeschool

Jessica Beshearse

I literally said the words “I would never want to homeschool my kids.” But God has a way of taking the things you never thought you wanted to do and turning them into things you can’t imagine your life without.

God had put on my heart to homeschool the youngest of my four biological children, Noah, several months before the Lord had also told my husband and me that we were to reopen our home for foster care. We had taken a season away from fostering after a hard placement. We had also opened our home to a family that stayed with us for nine months. Though I was reluctant to the call to homeschool Noah, I knew it was what God wanted for us. So, I said yes all at the same time as we were in the process of reopening our home.

Homeschool = Embracing the Unexpected

A week after our family was approved to take in fosters again, God brought us a sibling group of 4 children, and I instantly knew why God had given me the gift of homeschooling my son. He struggled greatly when a group of children came to live with us, calling us mom and dad and all desperately needing so much of our attention. So much of the attention he was used to having all to himself. Though he was very excited to help kids in need, it was all very overwhelming once they were actually here. Noah was going to need that one-on-one time with me, as he got used to how his family was changing. I was so grateful that the Lord thought of Noah’s little heart in that way.

We have just finished our second year of homeschool. We have also begun the process of adopting those four sweet children that needed a family and God brought to us 2 years ago now. Noah is excited that this coming year, his soon to officially be, brother and 3 sisters will all be homeschooling with him from now on.

I have been blessed with the gift of precious time with my children, and I truly believe that no one is better equipped to teach a child than their own parent. While I understand that not everyone has the ability to homeschool, I am deeply grateful for this opportunity. It’s a privilege to spend this time not only with the child God allowed me to carry in my womb but also with the children He specifically chose for my husband and me to raise.
