One of the first questions that comes to mind when parents begin considering homeschooling in Tennessee is, “What are the requirements to homeschool in Tennessee?” Staying legal is definitely a great place to start, in our opinion, and we have some helpful information to share with you!
TN homeschooling laws offer three options for homeschooling families in Tennessee. Here is a quick chart of reference that covers the differences in these options:
Independent Homeschooler Through Local County
- Cost: Free
- Process: Submit an Intent to Homeschool form with your county’s homeschool coordinator prior to starting school. Forms and Coordinator information are found here: Independent Home School Requirements – Tennessee Notice of Intent to Home School
- Pros: No cost, Simple process, Minimal paperwork required. Document which days you school for at least 6 hours and ensure 180 days are completed in one year.
- Cons: Must complete state testing in grades 5/7/9. No guidance in preparing high school transcripts for college.
Church-related Umbrella School (Category IV)
- Cost: Varied, approximately $75 a year
- Process: Choose an approved umbrella school and follow the enrollment process. List of approved schools here: Umbrella Schools
- Pros: Assistance with record-keeping, curriculum selection, graduation counseling, driver’s ed. forms, graduation ceremonies.
- Cons: Enrollment fee paid annually. Some restrictions may apply on curriculum choices.
Accredited Online Program (Category III)
- Cost: Varied, comparable to private school
- Process: Choose an online accredited program and follow the enrollment process.
- Pros: Programming, curriculum, and online instruction is included in the price. Attendance and transcript records kept by organization.
- Cons: Limited choice in curriculum, instructional style, and course selection.
